By the ending, The Repeat Room no longer feels primarily like a dystopian thought
experiment. What remains is the unbearable fragility of interior life under systems built
to classify and control it. Ball gradually conditions readers into procedural thinking before
forcing them back into embodied intimacy. That movement is the novel’s true achievement.
