When we assembled the craft and theory section for this issue, we found the chosen
pieces all involved conversation: between writer and reader, writer and self, text and

But not just with the writing, often the author as well. For 26 letters can expose the
soul in all its vulnerability, yet we artists still invite others to respond—to comment, to
question, even to critique. Is it any surprise, then, that questions of what exactly we want
to communicate rise to the surface?

through human interaction. During the editing of our section, we returned repeatedly to
questions of voice: how it survives collaboration, how it changes through translation,

not as abstraction, but as presence, as something personal—the stubborn, vulnerable act
of saying: this is how I see it, this is how I feel, this is what I mean. As a result, the

the self against conformity and, by example, encourage active resistance against creative
